Privacy Policy: MySpend

MySpend is a personal money tracker for Android. This policy covers the Google Play version.

Summary

  • No account, no server, no backend. We do not receive your data.
  • Your money data is stored only on your phone.
  • No ads, no analytics, no crash reporting, no tracking.
  • The Google Play version cannot read your SMS inbox. You choose which messages to paste or share into it.

What the app stores on your phone

In databases inside the app's private storage (IndexedDB in the app's web view) and the app's preferences:

  • Transactions you add or import: amount, date, category, merchant, notes, tags, account, source.
  • Accounts, cards (including the last four digits if you enter them), loans, assets, investments, goals, budgets, bills, subscriptions and insurance entries you add.
  • People and family members you add (names, relation, and optionally date of birth, school and class, notes and a monthly limit; chores, pocket-money entries and school fee plans if you use the Family features), and shared or split expenses.
  • A family health record if you keep one: vaccines, growth measurements, doctor visits, medicines and doses, blood pressure, blood sugar and weight readings, and check-ups. It stays on your phone like everything else and is never sent anywhere. MySpend does not give medical advice.
  • Your profile: name, phone number and income if you enter them. They are not verified or sent anywhere.
  • Imported SMS records: a short fingerprint and the parsed fields (amount, date, bank). The message text is not kept unless you turn on "Keep original messages".
  • Bill and receipt photos, as downsized JPEG files in the app's private storage, with the reminder records that belong to them.
  • Settings: theme, notification choices, app lock settings. The app lock PIN is stored only as a salted hash.

What the app does with it

  • Everything is calculated on the phone.
  • SMS and bill text is read on the phone. Bill and receipt photos are read by Google ML Kit text recognition running inside the app, with the language models bundled in the app. The photo is not uploaded.
  • Reminders and alerts are local notifications created by the phone.
  • If you use the app lock, Android's biometric prompt checks your fingerprint or face. The app never receives your biometric data.

Network

The app's own code makes no network requests and has no server to talk to. The only link in the app is Settings, "Privacy policy", which opens this page in your browser when you tap it; that page is then governed by its own site.

Permissions

  • Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS): bill, budget and goal reminders. Off until you turn them on.
  • Boot (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED) and wake lock: so reminders return after a restart and can be delivered. The app does not use exact alarms, so a reminder can arrive a little after the time you chose.
  • Biometric (USE_BIOMETRIC, USE_FINGERPRINT): optional unlock of the app lock.
  • Vibrate, network state: added by libraries.
  • Camera and photos: the app uses the Android camera and photo picker apps for bill scans. It does not hold a camera or storage permission.
  • SMS: the Google Play version does not request any SMS permission. To import a message you paste it or use Share, then MySpend on a message. Only the text you choose is read.

Backups and exports

  • "Take a copy of your data" and backup files are created on your phone. They go where you choose in the Android share sheet or your Documents folder.
  • Android device backup is switched off for this app: its data is not copied to Google backup or to a new phone. Use the app's own backup file if you want a copy. Bill photos and bill reminders are not in that backup file.

Sharing

We do not sell, share or receive your data. Data leaves the phone only through actions you take, such as sharing a report, a settle-up message or a backup file.

Deleting your data

  • Delete single items in the app. "Delete import history" in SMS import clears the import fingerprints and history.
  • Settings, "Erase everything on this phone" deletes all of it and starts the app over: the ledger, the smart-tools data, SMS import records, bill records, saved bill photos, your settings (theme, app lock, reminder choices) and scheduled reminders.
  • Uninstalling removes all app data.
  • Files you exported are separate copies. Delete them where you saved them.

Children

The app is for adults. It is not directed at children under 13. The Family features are tools for a parent to track a household.

Changes

A changed policy will be published at the same address with a new effective date.
