Short version
Star Chart is a habit and reward chart for families. Everything you and your children enter stays on your phone. The developer receives none of it. The Android build blocks the internet permission, so the app makes no network calls. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics, no crash reporting, no in-app purchases and no links out of the app.
What the app stores on your device
- Children: a first name or nickname, a built-in cartoon animal picture, a colour, the reward they are saving for, and which stickers they have already seen. The app does not ask for or store a full name, age, birthday, photo, school, address, email or phone number. The nickname field accepts letters only.
- Habits: name, picture, star value, which days and time of day.
- Stars: which habit was done on which day, how many stars, and whether a grown-up has approved it.
- Rewards and requests: reward names and star costs, and the history of rewards asked for and given.
- Settings: approval and buzz switches, week start, reminder times and quiet hours.
This data is kept in a local database (SQLite) in the app's private storage. A backup file you export is written to the app's storage before the share sheet opens. The app adds no encryption of its own beyond your phone's storage protection.
Children's privacy
Star Chart is designed for families with young children and is part of Google Play's Families programme. We follow these rules:
- No personal information is collected from children. Nothing a child does in the app is sent to the developer or anyone else. The app cannot connect to the internet.
- Only a nickname. A grown-up types a first name or nickname for each child. It never leaves the phone. Children never type anything.
- No photos, voice or location. The app has no camera, microphone or location access; avatars are built-in drawings.
- No ads and no tracking. There are no advertising SDKs, no advertising ID (it is blocked), no analytics, no crash reporting and no third-party code that sends data.
- No purchases, links or sharing for children. There are no in-app purchases, no web links and no social features. Settings, editing, approvals, deleting and backup are behind a parent gate (press and hold 3 seconds, then type a four-digit number written in words). The only way to share anything is the backup file, and only from behind the gate.
- Notifications are optional, set by a grown-up, scheduled on the phone, and use generic text without children's names.
- Parents are in control. A parent can see, change or delete everything in the app at any time (see below). Because the developer holds no data, there is nothing for a parent to request from the developer, but you are welcome to contact us with any question.
This approach is intended to meet the requirements of the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the EU and UK GDPR rules for children's data, and Google Play's Families policy.
Data types, in plain terms
| Data | Collected by the developer | Shared | Processed on device | Optional | You can delete it | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Child's nickname, animal, colour | No | No (only inside a backup file you share) | Yes | Yes | Yes | | Habits, stars, rewards, requests | No | No (only inside a backup file you share) | Yes | Yes | Yes | | Settings and reminder times | No | No | Yes | Yes | Yes | | Location, contacts, photos, audio, device IDs, advertising ID | Not accessed | No | n/a | n/a | n/a |
Network calls
None. The internet permission is blocked in the app. There is no account system, analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or third-party SDK that sends data. The font is bundled inside the app. The privacy policy address is shown as text only; the app does not open it.
Permissions
- Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS): only if a grown-up turns on reminders. Reminders are scheduled on the phone, with no push server.
- Run at start-up, vibrate, wake lock: added by the notifications library so reminders survive a restart. Vibrate is also used for the optional short buzz when a star is earned.
- Blocked: internet, network state, camera, microphone, location, storage, advertising ID, drawing over other apps and push messaging.
- For backup import, the app uses the Android system file picker, so it needs no storage permission.
Sharing
A backup file leaves the phone only when a grown-up opens parent mode, taps Export backup and chooses where to save or send it. It contains the children's nicknames and their charts. Once shared, the receiving app's privacy policy applies. The developer never receives it.
Backups
Android's automatic backup is switched off for this app (allowBackup is false), so the charts are not copied to Google's cloud. To move to a new phone, use parent mode, Settings, Export backup, and import the file on the new phone.
How to delete data
- In parent mode: delete a single star (Approvals, Remove), a habit, a reward or a child (which deletes all of that child's data), or Settings, Delete all data. Delete all data clears the database and cancels all reminders.
- Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in Android settings, removes everything, including exported files kept in app storage.
- Copies of a backup you shared to other apps must be deleted there.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at the same address with a new effective date.
